A state funeral for former US President Jimmy Carter was held at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, on January 9, 2025. The funeral was attended by American politicians, foreign dignitaries, and family members, including President Joe Biden, who delivered a eulogy. Other dignitaries in attendance included President-elect Donald Trump, and former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.
The casket bearing Carter’s remains was first seen leaving the US Capitol building and then arriving at the National Cathedral for the funeral service. The casket was carried by a procession of military personnel and clergy, with family members and dignitaries following behind.
Those in attendance included the Carters’ grandchildren, including Jason Carter, who spoke during the service. Jack and Liz Carter, two of Carter’s grandchildren, were also in attendance, along with former First Lady Hillary Clinton, First Lady Jill Biden, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
After the eulogy, Biden touched the casket as he made his way to deliver the eulogy, a traditional gesture of respect and tribute. President-elect Trump was also in attendance, shaking hands with Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff before the service.
Following the funeral, a memorial service was held outside the National Cathedral, where attendees could sign a condolence book in honor of the 39th President of the United States.
