[The official state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will be held on January 9, according to the White House. The funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, where President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy.
Biden declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning following Carter’s passing at the age of 100. He praised Carter as a man who “worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us.”
Public observances honoring Carter’s legacy will be held in Atlanta and Washington, DC, followed by a private interment in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. His motorcade will travel through Plains on January 4, past his boyhood home and the Georgia State Capitol, before arriving at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta.
Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta from January 4 to January 7, and the public can pay their respects. He will then lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC, on January 7 and 8.
Biden will deliver a eulogy at the funeral service, calling Carter “just as courageous in his battle against cancer as he was in everything in his life.” He praised Carter’s life, saying, “He lived a life measured not by words, but by his deeds.”
