Jimmy Carter, a one-term president who became a globe-trotting elder statesman, dies at 100

Former President Jimmy Carter, a Georgia peanut farmer who vowed to restore morality and truth to politics after an era of White House scandal and redefined post-presidential service, has died at the age of 100. He passed away on Sunday in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, according to the Carter Center.

Carter, a Democrat, served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, losing his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan. Despite his notable achievements as a peacemaker, his presidency is often remembered as an unfulfilled four-year term marked by economic struggles and a decline in America’s international standing. However, his enduring legacy lies in his post-presidency, which has been marked by tireless humanitarian work and activism, earning him numerous awards and accolades.

Carter became the oldest living former president when he surpassed the record held by the late George H.W. Bush in 2019. His wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023, after 77 years of marriage. The former president was active in public life, continuing to travel and conduct international diplomacy, even after setbacks and falls in his advanced age.

Carter’s presidency was marred by the 444-day Iran hostage crisis, which had a devastating impact on the US economy and international relations. His struggles at home, including a sluggish economy, high inflation, and an energy crisis, ultimately contributed to his defeat. However, he remained committed to his values, and his post-presidency became a defining feature of his life.

As the founder of the Carter Center, Carter has been a driving force in promoting human rights, democracy, and global peace. He has traveled extensively, observing elections, negotiating with authoritarian leaders, and combating poverty, disease, and epidemics. His efforts have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter’s passing marks the end of an era, as he is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and statesman, who left an indelible mark on the world. His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of public service, compassion, and the power of individual action in shaping a better future for all.
