Jim Carrey Returns to Acting for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

What Jim Carrey Had to Say About His Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Return

Jim Carrey has revealed his reason for returning to the role of Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In a recent interview, Carrey spoke about his decision to reprise the eccentric and mustachioed villain, saying he got the script written in “gold ink by angels.” However, when pressed for an explanation, Carrey revealed the true reason was simply that he needs the money.

“I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money,” Carrey said, admitting that his earlier statement about only returning if given a script written in gold ink by angels may have been a bit of an exaggeration.

Despite announcing his retirement from the industry in 2022, Carrey’s return to the Sonic universe is not entirely surprising. His portrayal of Dr. Robotnik has been a standout in the franchise, and he is set to bring his signature humor to the role once again in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The film, which is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, will see Dr. Robotnik team up with Sonic’s rival, Shadow the Hedgehog, to cause chaos in the world. The movie also marks the return of Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and James Marsden, with Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog.

Carrey’s reason for his return may be driven by financial necessity, but his passion for the character is evident. As he put it, “I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I get to play a genius, and it’s a lot of fun.”
