Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly axed a trade for a star wide receiver due to a video game rating.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson Under Fire for Alleged Role in Trade Decision

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is facing scrutiny after a report accused him of meddling in the team’s operations, including a failed trade for Cleveland Browns star receiver Jerry Jeudy. The report, published by The Athletic, claims that Johnson pulled the plug on the deal because of Jeudy’s Madden NFL rating.

The report also alleges that Johnson’s two teenage sons have an influence in the decision-making process, with sources claiming that their opinions are taken into consideration alongside those of experienced executives. However, a spokesperson for the Jets denied this claim, stating that the opinions of Johnson’s children are “used as a reference point” but not “determinative.”

The report’s findings paint a picture of dysfunction within the Jets’ organization, which has missed the playoffs for the 14th consecutive year, the longest active streak in the NFL. The failed trade for Jeudy was just one example of Johnson’s alleged interference, with the report also citing the owner’s influence on signing guard John Simpson.

Johnson’s role in the trade decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for him to step down. The Jets’ offseason has already been marked by change, with the team firing both its head coach and general manager and demoting its offensive coordinator. Despite the controversy, the team has vowed to continue its quest for success, with more turnover and fewer leaks anticipated in the coming months.
