New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has made a splash in his first major addition to his coaching staff, announcing that he has agreed to terms with Steve Wilks as the team’s new defensive coordinator, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

Wilks, 55, has an extensive coaching background, having most recently served as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator in 2023. He has also previously held the role of head coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

As a seasoned veteran, Wilks is expected to provide wisdom and perspective for Glenn, who stated in his introductory press conference that he does not plan to call defensive plays. Wilks’ addition is seen as a pivotal one for the team, as he will be working with a defense featuring talented players such as brothers Quinnen and Quincy Williams, cornerback Sauce Gardner, and budding star Will McDonald IV.

In addition to Wilks, the Jets are also set to add Denver Broncos assistant Chris Banjo as their new special teams coordinator, according to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo.

Glenn is also bringing in Detroit Lions tight ends coach Steve Heiden to coach the Jets’ offensive line, as reported by Pelissero. With this early move, Glenn is building an experienced coaching staff that is expected to help guide the team to success in the upcoming season.
