Jerod Mayo expected to return as Patriots coach in 2025.

Mayo’s Rough Start as Patriots Head Coach

Bill Mayo, a former New England linebacker and defensive assistant under Bill Belichick, has struggled in his first year as the Patriots’ head coach. After winning their first game, the team lost six in a row and is currently on a four-game losing streak. The offense, led by quarterback Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye, ranks 31st in scoring and 30th in total yards, while the defense, Mayo’s specialty, is 23rd in points allowed and 21st in total yards allowed.

Despite not being projected to make the playoffs in 2024, the Patriots’ lack of competitiveness in some of their losses has raised concerns about Mayo’s job security. Owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft were seen looking displeased during a recent loss, sparking speculation that they may be unhappy with Mayo. However, Mayo has denied this, stating that the Krafts have been fully supportive of the team.

The Patriots have never fired a coach after just one season under the Krafts, and it appears that they will take a long view with Mayo. With two games remaining against the AFC East champion Bills and one against the contending Chargers, the team could finish with a record of 3-14, their most losses in a season since 1992. However, the Krafts may be willing to overlook this slow start, given that Mayo will have a second-year coach and quarterback next season, and potentially another top-five pick in the draft. After over two decades of success, the Patriots may not feel the need to rush into building another dynasty.
