Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner dominated German Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles final of the Australian Open on Sunday, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3. The victory marked Sinner’s second consecutive Australian Open title and solidified his top ranking in tennis, having been World No. 1 since June.

Sinner was unbeaten in the final, facing zero break points and outperforming Zverev in several key statistics, including winners (32-25) and unforced errors (45-27). Zverev acknowledged Sinner’s superiority, saying, “You’re the best player in the world, by far. I was hoping that I could be more of a competitor today, but you’re just too good. It’s as simple as that.”

This victory marks Sinner’s third Grand Slam title, with his previous wins coming at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. He also reached the semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon. Sinner is only the eighth man in the Open Era to start his career 3-0 in Grand Slam finals.

Sinner’s win comes at a time when he is under scrutiny due to positive tests for a trace amount of an anabolic steroid, which he attributed to accidental exposure involving members of his team. He was initially cleared in August, but the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed the decision, with a ruling scheduled for April. Not everyone in the tennis community has been supportive, with some stars like Nick Kyrgios speaking out about the doping violations of Sinner and others.

Despite the controversy, Sinner’s impressive performance in the Australian Open solidified his position as one of the top players in the world.
