Italian Tennis Star Jannik Sinner Wins Second Consecutive Australian Open Title
Jannik Sinner has won his second consecutive Australian Open title, defeating German Alexander Zverev in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3. This victory solidified Sinner’s top ranking in tennis, and he has now been the number one player in the world since June.
Sinner did not face a single break point throughout the match and had more winners (32-25) and fewer unforced errors (45-27) than Zverev. After the match, Zverev praised Sinner, saying “You’re the best player in the world, by far. I was hoping that I could be more of a competitor today, but you’re just too good. It’s as simple as that.”
This is the third Grand Slam title for Sinner, who has also won the U.S. Open last year and reached the semifinals in the French Open and Wimbledon. He has become the eighth man in the Open era to start his career 3-0 in Grand Slam finals.
Despite the massive spotlight on him, Sinner won the tournament just weeks after being cleared of a doping violation following a trace amount of an anabolic steroid detected in his system. He attributed the positive test to an accidental exposure involving two members of his team, and a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport exonerated him. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency is appealing the ruling and Sinner will face a further hearing in April.
In the aftermath of Sinner’s victory, American Madison Keys also won the women’s singles title, upsetting the number one-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.
