IDF to Keep Forces in Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire Deal Set to Expire

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that it will not withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon as the 60-day truce set to expire on Sunday. According to the November ceasefire agreement, Israel was to begin withdrawing its troops from the region, which it launched operations in to dismantle Hezbollah. However, Israeli officials argue that the IDF will not withdraw due to unmet stipulations under the deal, including the removal of Hezbollah terrorists and weapons from the region and the deployment of Lebanese and UN troops.

Israeli officials pointed out that the Lebanese government has not fulfilled its obligations under the agreement, and therefore, the withdrawal process will continue gradually. The US has backed Israel’s decision, stating that it is committed to ensuring Israeli citizens can safely return to their homes in northern Israel while also supporting the new Lebanese government.

Hezbollah, on the other hand, has called on the Lebanese government and international partners to ensure the implementation of the full withdrawal and deployment of Lebanese troops throughout the country. The group has urged governments not to provide any excuses to prolong the occupation.

Over 1.2 million people were displaced in Lebanon following fighting in October, which was prompted by months of missile exchanges with Hezbollah. Israeli officials have reported positive movements by the Lebanese army and UNIFIL, but stress that more work needs to be done.

Israel has reportedly petitioned the Trump administration for a 30-day extension to fully withdraw its forces from Lebanon. The White House has not commented on the matter.
