Jose Eduardo Cortez, a 34-year-old man, made his first court appearance yesterday pertaining to a heinous crime he allegedly committed on March 28. According to reports, Cortez set his ex-girlfriend, 30-year-old Sofia Rodriguez, on fire when she refused to reconcile their relationship.
The tyrannical act took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, leaving Rodriguez with severe burns on her face, chest, and arms. She has since been airlifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Eyewitnesses informed the authorities that Cortez’ actions occurred after he and his ex-girlfriend had a heated argument outside her residence. Following a scuffle, he allegedly grabbed a can of diesel fuel and doused it over Rodriguez before tossing a match, igniting the flames.
As a crowd watched in horror, the authorities were rapidly called, apprehending Cortez, who was tackled to the ground until he was subdued. Neighbors reported hearing screams and sounds of the commotion, which prompted them to notify the authorities immediately.
Detectives have stated they are reviewing hours of surveillance footage, which captured the assault, and are interviewing potential witnesses to gather evidence to proceed with the criminal case. According to them, the suspect is being held without bail, as they believe the threat to public safety is too significant to grant him bond.
Representing the prosecution, District Attorney Larry Krasner expressed gratitude to the public for their swift intervention and cooperation in the capture of the suspect, stating that charges may potentially include first-degree attempted murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison.
The motive behind the violent act remains unclear, with officials left searching for the truth behind the despicable crime.
