Lions Dominate San Francisco, Set Franchise Record for Points
The Detroit Lions had little to play for on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers, but they certainly didn’t act like it. The Lions offense put on a show, scoring 40-plus points without a turnover for the fifth time this season, a new NFL record. This marks the sixth 40-plus-point game for the Lions this year, and they are averaging 33.3 points per game, which would set a new franchise single-season record.
Quarterback Jared Goff led the charge, throwing for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, earning a 132.4 passer rating. This marks the fourth consecutive game with three-plus passing TDs for Goff, the longest streak by a Lions QB in the Super Bowl era.
The Lions could have rested some of their key players ahead of next week’s showdown against the Minnesota Vikings, but coach Dan Campbell decided to keep his foot on the gas. Campbell admitted he considered sitting a few players, but ultimately decided it was best to keep the team’s momentum going.
The Lions escaped the game without major injury, setting up a thrilling matchup against the Vikings in Week 18. The game will feature a battle of 14-win clubs, with the winner claiming the division title and the top seed in the playoffs. Coach Campbell called the scenario “fairytale stuff,” and fans are certainly excited for the matchup.
