New York Jets’ Defensive Coordinator saleh’s Interim Success
After the Jets fired Robert Saleh after just five weeks, defensive coordinator Ulbrich took the reins as interim coach for the next 12 games, leading the team to a 3-9 record. Although his stint was short-lived, Ulbrich learned valuable lessons from the experience.
Ulbrich recognized the importance of having “truth-tellers” on the staff, rather than “smoke-blowers.” He noticed that his approach changed after becoming interim coach, with some coaches holding back vital information due to his new role. Ulbrich believes that having a “truth-teller” by his side is crucial in helping the team, particularly with new head coach Raheem Morris.
As defensive coordinator, Ulbrich will call plays under Morris’ guidance, and aims to have a collaborative effort with the entire staff. He plans to have “hard conversations” to ensure transparency and eliminate any “blind spots” that might arise. This approach seeks to instill a culture of honesty and open communication within the team.
