Meredith Tabbone’s Italian Dream Home: A $475,000 Investment in her Passion

Ad

Meredith Tabbone, a financial advisor from Chicago, had always been fascinated by her family’s Sicilian heritage. When she stumbled upon a town in Italy called Sambuca di Sicilia, auctioning off abandoned properties for a starting price of 1 euro, she saw it as a sign. Taking a chance, Tabbone placed a bid for 5,555 euros and won the auction, spending a total of $6,200. What started as a unique experience turned into a life-long passion project.

Renovating the property was not without its challenges. With no electricity, running water, or even functional buildings, Tabbone encountered numerous obstacles. The once-abandoned property, nicknamed Casa dell’Architetto in honor of Tabbone’s architect father, required a major facelift. Despite having no prior renovation experience, Tabbone, now 45, dedicated over four years to restoring her dream home.

Combining the original 1-euro property with a second adjacent building, Tabbone spent a total of $475,000, including taxes and fees, to create a spacious residence with two primary bedrooms, two guest bedrooms, and a plethora of luxurious amenities. The finished project blends modern finishes with original archways, a trough kitchen, and a unique staircase, showcasing the beauty and character of the 800-year-old building.

Despite the significant investment, Tabbone’s ultimate goal was to create a comfortable retreat where she could enjoy quality time with family and friends. The finished space is perfect for entertaining guests, with a pizza oven, outdoor dining area, and dry-heat sauna. Tabbone hopes to spend four months per year in her Sambuca home, continuing to build relationships with fellow expats and locals who share her passion for life in this charming town.

For Tabbone, her Italian dream home symbolizes a bridge between her past and future. Connecting with her family’s lineage and creating a new space for herself, Tabbone has discovered the joy of living life on her own terms. She views her experience as an essential reminder of the importance of preserving old buildings, maintaining their unique character and essence.

In the end, Tabbone’s grand adventure has not only renovated a beautiful home but also transformed her perspective on work-life balance, community building, and personal fulfillment.
