Title: You Don’t Need Expensive Fitness Apparel to Get Started with Exercise

It’s great to have a resolve to start a regular exercise routine, but do you need to break the bank on fancy fitness apparel? Experts say not necessarily. “If you’re exercising purely for fun or to be more active, it’s not the most important thing to go out and buy specific clothing,” said Dr. Joel Hardwick, a clinical exercise physiologist. What’s most important is finding clothes that are comfortable and allow you to move freely.

Of course, if you’ll be exercising outdoors, you’ll want to consider the weather and climate. “It’s more important to think about clothing for the climate and other weather considerations, such as rain,” Hardwick added. When choosing clothing for outdoor activities, it’s best to opt for synthetics over cotton, which can absorb moisture and hold it against your skin, leading to discomfort and potential health issues.

In cold weather, layers are key, with a focus on allowing air to circulate and moisture to be wick away. And don’t forget about your shoes. Ideally, you’ll want shoes specific to your chosen activity, such as running shoes for running, but an all-purpose sports shoe can also work. What’s most important is that your shoes are comfortable and provide adequate support.

While buying specific fitness apparel can be beneficial, it’s not necessary, especially if you’re just starting out. Kaylee Johnson, a lead performance coach, suggested that you should prioritize what you’re comfortable with and not let the need for expensive clothing hold you back from getting active.

In terms of what you do invest in, consider starting with one complete outfit that’s specific to your activity of choice. This can help improve your performance, comfort, and even confidence. But remember, the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel good and doesn’t hinder your movement. As Hardwick noted, “More expensive does not mean better. As long as you’re feeling comfortable and confident, then your clothing is doing its job.”
