The announcement of the 2025 SAG Award nominations has set the stage for the upcoming 2025 Oscar race. The Golden Globes, while having some surprises and snubs, were predictable in some categories, with Adrien Brody’s victory in the Best Actor, Drama category for The Brutalist and Zoe Saldaña’s Best Supporting Actress, Musical or Comedy win for Emilia Pérez.
The SAG Awards, on the other hand, have more staying power leading into the Academy Awards. With the 31st annual SAG Awards to take place on February 23, 2025, at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, the event will stream live on Netflix.
Wicked, which won Best Box Office & Cinematic Achievement at the Golden Globes, earned the most SAG Award film nominations with five, followed by A Complete Unknown’s four. Wicked is likely to be nominated for Best Picture and numerous acting categories.
The SAG Award category to keep an eye on is the Best Cast In A Motion Picture, which has gone to the eventual Best Picture winner in four out of the past five years. All five films nominated, including Wicked, A Complete Unknown, Anora, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez, are near-locks to receive Best Picture nominations.
The most surprising yet unsurprising SAG Award nominee for Best Supporting Actress is Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in The Last Showgirl. With Saldana’s Golden Globe win and SAG Award inclusion, she is still in the lead in the Best Supporting Actress race. Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) and Daniell Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) are worthy yet unexpected entries.
Ariana Grande’s chances of winning an Oscar for her Wicked performance have been diminished, and Selena Gomez’s chances of receiving an acting Oscar nomination have also been lessened. Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) is also in the mix, making for a highly competitive Supporting Actress race at the Oscars.
Statistically, five of eight Golden Globe winners have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, while 14 of 15 SAG Award winners have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. If Saldaña sweeps the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, she’ll be a shoo-in to take home her first career Oscar in March.
