[Donald Trump’s Latest Pentagon Pick in Jeopardy as GOP Senators Raise Concerns Over Allegations of Misconduct
Donald Trump is facing a new challenge in his bid to shake up Washington as his pick for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, is facing allegations of misconduct and mistreatment of women. The President-elect’s decision to select Hegseth has been met with stiff resistance from many in the Republican Party, and some senators are now questioning whether he is the right person for the job.
A number of GOP senators have publicly expressed concerns about Hegseth’s treatment of women and his ability to lead the Pentagon. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a frequent Trump golf partner and military veteran, said that some of the allegations against Hegseth are “going to be difficult.” Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, another veteran, said she would have a “frank and thorough conversation” with Hegseth, while Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy expressed concern about the allegations and said he would “have to address them.”
Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, meanwhile, said that Hegseth needed to address the latest allegations, and Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma believed it was “reasonable and fair” to ask about allegations that Hegseth was intoxicated at work events. Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley acknowledged that some of his colleagues were “very worried” about Hegseth’s qualifications, but urged them to hear him out in a confirmation hearing.
The controversy surrounding Hegseth’s nomination comes as the Trump administration prepares to take office and as the President-elect faces criticism for his pick for Attorney General, Matt Gaetz, who was forced to withdraw due to allegations of conduct. Trump’s decision to select Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense has faced opposition from many in the GOP, and the President-elect must now decide how much support to give to his embattled nominee.
Hegseth’s fate hangs in the balance, with the New York Times reporting that his mother sent him an email in 2018, stating that he “belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego.” Other allegations have been made against Hegseth, including claims of mismanagement and personal misconduct, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to overcome these allegations and win confirmation as the next Secretary of Defense.
