Google Sues to Regulate US Surveillance

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has placed Google Payment Corp. under federal supervision, citing concerns about the company’s error resolution and fraud prevention processes. The agency found that these processes pose risks to consumers, citing complaints about Google Pay Balance and peer-to-peer payments. The CFPB’s order does not mean that Google is “guilty of wrongdoing,” but rather that the company must undergo routine inspections and monitoring, similar to those imposed on banks. Google has filed a lawsuit to block the order, claiming that the complaints against it are “unsubstantiated.” The company’s peer-to-peer payment platform was discontinued earlier this year.
