Scottie Scheffler Withdraws from The American Express Due to Injury
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, has withdrawn from The American Express on Monday, citing a glass puncture in his right hand that he suffered on Christmas. The 28-year-old underwent minor surgery to repair the injury.
Scheffler, who won nine times worldwide in 2024, including seven PGA Tour titles, is hoping to make his 2025 PGA Tour debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, scheduled for January 30.
After consulting with his medical team, Scheffler announced his decision to withdraw from the American Express tournament on his Instagram account, stating, “After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week’s American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal.”
Scheffler’s withdrawal comes as a surprise, given his impressive 2024 season. He won the Masters for a second time, represented the United States at the Paris Olympic Games, and won a gold medal. He also became the first player since Tiger Woods to win PGA Tour player of the year in three consecutive seasons, and he held the No. 1 ranking for an entire calendar year.
Scheffler’s impressive season saw him set a record for prize money won in one season, earning $54 million in total, including a $25 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup. The American Express tournament is scheduled for January 16-19 in Palm Desert, California.
