Godzilla vs. Baraguirus: The Cancelled Monster Movie That Would Have Combined Baragon and Anguirus

In the 1990s, Toho, the production company behind the Godzilla franchise, considered combining two classic kaiju, Baragon and Anguirus, into one monster for a movie. The creature, dubbed Baraguirus, would have been a fusion of the two monsters’ physical characteristics, with Baragon’s subterranean abilities and Anguirus’s combat prowess.

The concept for Baraguirus was conceived by Shinji Nishikawa, who intended for the creature to exist as a mix of Baragon and Anguirus’s physical characteristics, rather than a proper fusion. The idea was part of a larger script that would have seen Baraguirus face off against Ghost Godzilla, the resurrected form of the original Godzilla.

According to Nishikawa, the setting for one of the fights would have featured a rebuilt Moguera, the robot destroyed by SpaceGodzilla in the previous film, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. Baraguirus would have been an ideal villain for this underground battle, as Baragon is a subterranean creature that builds underground tunnels.

After the battle, Baraguirus would have been possessed by Ghost Godzilla and used as a vessel for a confrontation with Godzilla himself. Unfortunately, the script was cancelled, and the concept for Baraguirus was never realized.

There are no official designs for Baraguirus, but fans can imagine what the creature might have looked like based on the characteristics of Baragon and Anguirus. The idea of combining these two classic kaiju is an intriguing one, and it’s interesting to think about how it could have added to the Godzilla franchise.
