Geno Smith’s Big Season Ends, but Extension in 2025 Uncertain

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has had a remarkable season, setting a new club record with 4,320 passing yards and leading the team to a 10th victory. As the season comes to a close, Smith is due for a significant payday, but whether he will receive an extension in 2025 remains uncertain.

Coach Mike Macdonald has publicly expressed his support for Smith, stating that he wants the quarterback to remain with the team. “I want Geno to be here,” Macdonald said. “I think he’s a heck of a player… I feel like Geno’s the best for the team right now.”

Smith’s impressive season statistics include 21 touchdowns, a 70.4 completion percentage, and 15 interceptions. He is one of only five players to have 20-plus pass touchdowns in each of the last three seasons. Despite some ups and downs, the Seahawks have finished above.500 in each season with Smith at the helm.

The 34-year-old quarterback has been instrumental in keeping the Seahawks offense afloat, making tough throws behind a leaky offensive line. He also battled a late-season knee injury but didn’t miss a start. Smith is entering the final year of his contract, which includes a base salary of $14.8 million, a $16 million roster bonus, and a $200,000 workout bonus.

The question now is whether General Manager John Schneider will seek an extension for Smith early in the offseason or wait until later. One factor that may influence the decision is the hiring of a new offensive coordinator, which could bring new ideas and approaches to the team. The Seahawks may also consider extending Smith while bringing in a rookie quarterback who could eventually take the reins.
