Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood Pay Tribute to Former President Carter with Moving Performance
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood paid their respects to former President Jimmy Carter with a heartfelt performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine” at his funeral on January 9 at Washington National Cathedral. The country music stars dressed in all black for the somber occasion, which was requested by the former president himself.
Brooks and Yearwood have been close friends with the Carters for many years, having met while working with Habitat for Humanity. They have been involved with the organization for years, including after Hurricane Katrina in 2007. The couple has spoken highly of the Carters, calling them “inspirational” and “humans of the highest order.”
In a statement, Brooks praised Carter’s legacy, saying, “President Carter, the legacy you and Rosalynn have left us is as beautiful as the life you lived. Thank you for your lifetime of service to our country and the world. You inspired us not just by what you said, but by what you built. We love you.”
Brooks and Yearwood have also been inspired by the Carters’ 77-year marriage, saying that they have been an example of humanity, humbleness, and work ethic. They have worked alongside the Carters on numerous Habitat for Humanity projects over the years, including a project in New York City in 1984 and another in Nashville in 2019.
The former president had a close relationship with many celebrities, including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Greg Allman, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffett, among others. Despite his passing, his legacy continues to inspire and motivate those who knew him.
Brooks and Yearwood recently attended the 2024 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Week Project to celebrate Carter’s 100th birthday in St. Paul, Minnesota. The event was hosted by Habitat for Humanity and focused on building houses and raising awareness for affordable housing.
