A fugitive who has been on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list for allegedly killing his wife on their wedding night in Illinois more than 12 years ago has been captured in Mexico.
Arnoldo Jimenez was taken into custody without incident on Thursday in Monterrey, Mexico, in connection with the 2012 death of 26-year-old Estrella Carrera.
Carrera was found dead in the bathtub of her apartment in Burbank, Illinois, just 48 hours after her marriage to Jimenez. He was charged with first-degree murder and a state warrant was issued for his arrest in May 2012. A federal warrant was issued two days later after he was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The FBI, along with the Fiscalía General de la República and the International Criminal Police Organization, was involved in the investigation to locate Jimenez. The authorities were able to arrest him with the help of the FBI Chicago, FBI San Antonio, FBI LEGAT Mexico City, and the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois.
Jimenez is the fourth-most wanted fugitive in the U.S. and will remain in custody pending extradition proceedings. The FBI and police are working together to bring justice to Carrera’s family.
