MSNBC Anchors Freak Out Over Trump’s Inauguration, Accuse Him of Being a “Dictator”
MSNBC anchors Rachel Maddow and Joy Reid went on the attack during their Inauguration Day coverage, expressing their shock and disgust at Donald Trump’s reward as the 47th President of the United States. Maddow was particularly agitated by the sight of Kirstjen Nielsen, Trump’s nominee for Department of Homeland Security, seated beside Apple CEO Tim Cook at the inauguration ceremony.
“How is this happening in America?” Maddow asked, aghast. “How is this normal?”
Reid, meanwhile, claimed that Trump’s return to the White House revealed fundamental flaws in America’s democratic institutions. She also accused Trump’s supporters of being motivated by “cruelty” and “greed”.
Reid listed off a number of Trump’s policy positions, including his plans to “wipe away the civic memory” of Washington, DC by ending birthright citizenship and implementing mass deportation. She also claimed that Trump’s support for transgender people and immigrants was nothing more than a ruse to appease his base.
Maddow and Reid were far from the only MSNBC personalities to express their outrage over Trump’s inauguration. CNN contributor Tim Naftali, also a frequent MSNBC guest, described Trump’s wave of executive orders as a move to “make good on his promise to be a dictator on day one”.
Naftali’s characterization of Trump’s actions sparked a heated discussion among the panel, with some advocating for more moderate language to describe the incoming administration’s policies. However, Reid stood firm in her assessment, claiming that the current state of the country is a “base mentality of greed and corruption”.
