Ex-Orioles Pitcher Brian Matusz Dies at 37
The Baltimore Orioles announced the passing of former pitcher Brian Matusz, who played for the team for most of his career, at the age of 37.
A staple in the Orioles’ clubhouse from 2009-2016, Matusz was beloved for his passion for baseball and the Baltimore community. The team said in a statement that he was a “cherished teammate” and always had a “smile on his face.” His family and loved ones are in their thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
Matusz was a first-round draft pick by the Orioles in 2008 and made his major league debut in August 2009. He became a full-time starter in 2010 and finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting after recording 143 strikeouts and a 10-12 record in 32 starts.
Matusz struggled with injuries and was demoted to the bullpen in 2012, but he adapted well to his new role, lowering his ERA to under 4.00 in the 2013 season. He had an ERA of 2.94 during the 2015 season.
Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves in May 2016, but never appeared for the team. He signed with the Chicago Cubs and appeared in only one game for them, as they won the World Series that year.
The cause of Matusz’s death remains unclear. Former Orioles pitcher Matt Hobgood remembered Matusz on social media, saying that he was one of the first people to call him after he signed with the Orioles in 2009, and that he was a big source of encouragement and support.
