Former MLB Pitcher Brian Matusz Dies of Drug Overdose
Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz was found dead in his Arizona home earlier this month, with a white substance in his mouth and drug paraphernalia near him. Matusz’s mother, Elizabeth, told authorities that her son had been battling drug issues and had made remarks about feeling hopeless.
According to the Baltimore Banner, which cited a Phoenix police report, Matusz’s mother said that he had been clean for eight months before his death. However, he was taken to the emergency room two days before his death and was advised to seek a mental health professional. He was not admitted to a facility and died on January 6.
The Orioles announced Matusz’s death last week, saying that he was a “staple in our clubhouse” and was beloved by fans and teammates. Matusz played for the Orioles from 2009-2016 and was a full-time starter from 2010-2012. He finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2010 and played well in his bullpen role in 2013.
Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2016 but never appeared for them. He signed with the Chicago Cubs and appeared in only one game for them before they won the World Series.
