As the investigation into the mass shooting in New Orleans continues, a former FBI agent has come forward to shed some light on the potential methods and tactics the agency may use to uncover more information about the attacker.
According to former agent Mark Faggiano, the FBI is known for its ability to gather and analyze vast amounts of data, from security footage to social media to typed and digital communication. “They’re like a giant spider web, collecting threads from all corners of the internet,” he said.
Faggiano explained that the FBI may use a variety of tools to track down the attacker, including:
* Canine units: Trained to detect even the faintest scent of gunpowder or other evidence, canines are often used to sniff out the shooter’s path.
* Forensic analysis: The FBI uses cutting-edge technology to analyze evidence, including DNA, fingerprints, and other physical evidence.
* Online sleuthing: Agents may scour the internet for social media activity, online chatter, and other digital footprints left behind by the attacker.
* Informants: The FBI relies on trusted informants to provide information on the attacker’s associates, potential hideouts, and other details.
* Video surveillance: Local and national authorities work together to collect and review surveillance footage to pinpoint the shooter’s movements and potential escape routes.
Faggiano emphasized, “The key to surveillance is to cast a wide net, then sift through the grain to find the most valuable intel. It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack, but they have the resources to make it happen.”
He concluded, “When I was with the FBI, we always relied on our ability to gather and analyze data to catch the bad guys. I have no doubt they’ll do the same here.”
