Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz has yet to face formal allegations of misconduct, but he claims he can still win the state’s governorship despite the swirling sex scandals surrounding him.
Gaetz, a Republican, made the bold prediction in an interview with a Fox News host, stating that he believes Floridians “would be shocked” to learn how well he has dealt with the allegations. According to Gaetz, he has been “unfairly targeted” and that the scandals are simply a matter of “politically motivated” attacks.
The congressman’s statements come as a battered WPA Intelligence report, which has been obtained by the publication, alleges that Gaetz was involved in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, with whom he allegedly sent suggestive images and text messages. Additionally, The New York Times reported that the 21-year-old ex-girlfriend of a former colleague accused Gaetz of paying her to have sex, although there is no evidence to support these claims.
Despite the severity of the allegations, Gaetz seems confident that he can still win the governor’s race. In his interview with Fox News, he stated, “If you look at the election, I think I would be surprised if I wasn’t a strong candidate.” He also referenced a driver’s poll, indicating a close contest, but a hypothetical victory for himself.
As for what he plans to do to turn the tide of public opinion, Gaetz suggested: “I think most Americans are pretty skeptical of these kinds of charges, especially when you have a lot of ‘he-said, she-said’ in these stories.” Notably, he refrained from directly denying any aspect of the WPA Intelligence report.
There is still a lot to be exposed in this story, but Gaetz’s dismissal of the allegations could stem not only from his standing in the Republican Party but also his ability to tap into the sympathies of right-wing voters who might see him as a victim of partisanship or political retribution. Only time will tell if his strategy can help him dodge the scandals and secure the governor’s mansion.
