Flight-tracking apps clarify sightings in the sky

[How to check if an object in the sky is a drone or a plane

CNN’s Clare Duffy explains how flight-tracking apps are being used to help combat confusion around nearby aircraft in real time.

Have you ever looked up at the sky and wondered whether a flying object is a plane or a drone? If so, you’re not alone. With the growing use of drones in everyday life, it can be increasingly difficult to tell whether a small aircraft hovering overhead is a commercial airliner or a remote-controlled toy.

Flight-tracking apps can help. These apps allow users to track the locations and movements of nearby aircraft in real-time, using data provided by air traffic control and other sources.

To use a flight-tracking app, simply download it to your smartphone and register for an account. You can then use the app to search for aircraft flying in your area, along with their altitude, course, and speed.

While these apps can’t determine whether a specific object is a plane or a drone, they can provide important information that can help in the identification process.
