A 15-year-old girl identified as Natalie Rupnow opened fire on Monday at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, killing a teacher and a student, and wounding six others. The shooting occurred in a study hall at Abundant Life Christian School, and police were called to the scene. Natalie was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died on the way to the hospital.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said that the motive behind the shooting is still unclear, but authorities are working to determine the reasons behind the attacks. The police are speaking with Natalie’s family members, who are cooperating with the investigation, and are searching her home for clues.
The teacher and student killed in the shooting have not been identified, and the condition of the six wounded students remains unclear, with two in critical condition. The school, which has around 200 students, did not have a resource officer on campus and did not use metal detectors, but had cameras and other security measures in place.
The FBI has deployed agents to the scene to assist with the investigation, and President Biden has spoken with Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway to offer condolences and support. Biden has also issued a statement, saying that the shooting is “shocking and unconscionable” and that the country can never accept senseless violence that harms children, their families, and communities.
