US Citizens Urged to Use Encryption to Protect against Chinese Hacking
A recent warning from the FBI and CISA, the US cyber defense agency, is urging Americans to use responsibly encrypted messaging and phone calls to protect against hacking attacks. This comes amidst reports of the Chinese hacking of US networks, attributed to Salt Typhoon, a group associated with China’s Ministry of Public Security.
The hack has exposed vulnerabilities within critical US communication networks, making it important for individuals to take action to protect themselves. This includes using end-to-end encrypted messaging and calls whenever possible. Encryption is advised as it prevents content from being intercepted and read, even by tech giants.
The FBI is recommending the use of fully end-to-end encrypted apps, and CISA is urging the public to use encrypted communication methods. Apple, Google, and Meta also emphasize the importance of encryption and advise its use.
Some fully encrypted options include Signal, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, which also encrypt voice and video calls across platforms. While RCS has been touted as a more secure alternative to SMS, it lacks end-to-end encryption, making it an insecure option for cross-platform messaging.
Experts suggest stopping the use of cross-platform RCS messaging until it gains full encryption between iPhones and Androids. In the meantime, fully encrypted alternatives like WhatsApp, Signal, and Facebook Messenger should be used as the default communication methods.
