The Trailer for Black Bag, the Latest Thriller from Steven Soderbergh
The trailer has been released for Black Bag, a spy drama directed by Steven Soderbergh, known for his work on Traffic and Sex, Lies, and Videotape. The film features a talented cast, including Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Burke, and Regé-Jean Page.
The trailer begins with an exchange between the film’s central couple, Catherine (Blanchett) and George (Fassbender), where Catherine reveals she is going to “Black Bag.” The scene then transitions to George explaining what it’s like to be married to someone in the “industry,” where Catherine’s “devotion to her marriage is [her] professional weakness.” The main plot setup is then revealed, as George has to find a leak in a case where his wife is a suspect.
The spy couple setup is a unique concept, similar to the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-led Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Black Bag appears to be a more dramatic take, with Catherine asking George if he would “kill for her,” while George turns against her to solve the mystery at hand.
Fassbender is a great choice for the lead, having proven himself in the thriller genre with recent roles in The Killer and The Agency. The film’s trailer suggests it will explore themes of what one can hide beneath the guise of intimacy, making it an interesting watch.
Black Bag looks promising for Soderbergh’s return to the crime drama, following critically acclaimed films like Kimi and Traffic. The film is set to hit theaters on March 14.
