A family of four was found dead in their Pennsylvania home in an apparent murder-suicide. Paul Swarner, 35, his wife Karen, 32, and their two young children, a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old, were discovered in their house in Hempfield Township on January 24. Authorities believe Paul shot and killed his wife and children before taking his own life.
According to Trooper Steve Limani of the Pennsylvania State Police, the family had no known history of domestic violence and there was no indication of any strife or concern for their safety. The last person to speak with the family had a normal conversation with Karen on Wednesday, and the family’s parents tried calling them the next day but did not hear back.
Paul’s parents called 911 on Thursday night after not hearing from the family, and authorities recovered a Ruger.22 from the home, which is believed to be the firearm used in the shooting. Limani said that authorities are trying to determine if there was a triggering point or motive for the murder-suicide, and are reviewing a baby-camera to see if it captured any evidence.
The couple had been married for about 10 years and had an “all-American family” with no known issues. Limani described the scene as “unthinkable, unfathomable” and said that it is devastating to think about the loss of a family, including two young children. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward and are trying to find answers about what led to the tragic event.
