Falcon Kirk Cousins insists he’s still a capable QB despite benched role.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Morris spoke publicly for the first time since benching quarterback Matt Ryan and replacing him with rookie Michael Penix. Morris expressed appreciation for Ryan’s performance this year, describing him as a “pro, a man, a great human, a great father, and a great football player.”

However, Morris admitted that the team’s play at the quarterback position has not met expectations in recent weeks, leading to the decision to make a change. He praised Penix, a highly-regarded prospect from the 2024 draft class, saying he believes he will produce better results.

The future of Ryan’s NFL career is uncertain, with Morris stating that he has been relieved of his starting duties. This development could lead to a range of roster scenarios, including the possibility of the Falcons parting ways with Ryan, incurring significant cap penalties, or keeping him as a high-priced backup.

The team’s next moves will be determined by the evidence they gather in the final three games of the 2024 regular season. A successful stint by Penix could put the Falcons in position to make the playoffs and provide an answer for their future needs at the quarterback position. For now, Morris is focused on supporting Penix and helping him succeed.

Ryan, for his part, seems to have taken the news with class, saying, “I didn’t forget how to play quarterback. Certainly, the turnovers were not what you want, but I didn’t forget how to play.”
