Failed 2017 sci-fi film finds new life on streaming.

American Primeval: The Star-Studded Cast and Dane DeHaan’s Rise to Fame

American Primeval is an ensemble show that explores the origins of the American West through sweeping cinematography and dramatic storylines. The cast includes mothers, children, fathers, settlers, and indigenous people fighting to maintain their land rights. One of the notable actors in the series is Dane DeHaan, who plays Jacob Pratt, a Mormon man leading his family to Utah.

DeHaan’s career began with occasional TV appearances in shows like True Blood and Law & Order: SVU. He broke out in the sci-fi movie Chronicle and later joined the Marvel world, playing the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Lockhart in the psychological horror film A Cure for Wellness. However, his 2017 film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, received poor reviews, earning a meager 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 53% Popcornmeter, and was considered a box office failure.

However, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has found new success on the streaming service Max, currently ranking #5 in the United States. This is a significant rise from its initial premiere at #10, suggesting that DeHaan’s recent role in American Primeval may have contributed to its success. The film, based on the French comic series Valerian and Laureline, chronicles the adventures of two leads, played by DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, as they try to protect Alpha, a metropolis hosting species from a thousand planets.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ artistry, despite being formulaic, may appeal to modern viewers, and its current success on Max is a testament to the power of streaming platforms. With DeHaan’s increased visibility due to American Primeval, fans may be rediscovering his earlier work, including Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
