Appalachian State and James Madison University’s annual rivalry matchup took on a new twist in Boone, North Carolina, as a snowstorm hit the area, leaving a thick layer of snow on the field and in the stands. Despite the challenging conditions, the Mountaineers managed to come away with a 34-20 victory.
Appalachian State’s Joey Aguilar threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns, while Ahmani Marshall ran for 108 yards in the win. The Mountaineers trailed 17-14 with 1:23 remaining in the first half, but a blocked punt and a 9-yard return by Michael Hetzel gave them the lead for good with 40 seconds left before halftime.
The loss eliminated James Madison from a chance to represent the East Division in the conference championship game. The teams faced off in a rematch of last year’s contest, which saw Appalachian State end James Madison’s perfect season. The Mountaineers had previously ruined the Dukes’ bid to appear in a bowl game, leading to a lawsuit that was ultimately settled out of court.
