Trading Derek Crosby Made Little Sense for the Raiders

Ad

The decision to trade Derek Crosby made little sense for the Raiders, much like it did with Myles Garrett in Cleveland. The team would have likely only made the move if Crosby, a respected veteran, asked out. However, his comments since the hiring of head coach Josh Carroll suggest that such a request was never close.

Crosby recently spoke with Carroll and new general manager John Spytek, and expressed his enthusiasm for the team’s new direction. “The main things that (Carroll) talked about is, we’re going right now,” Crosby said. “We’re not wasting time. That’s the one thing he mentioned to me after his press conference. We’re going to get this thing rolling. So, it’s exciting.”

With two years left on his four-year, $94 million contract extension, Crosby’s future with the team seemed uncertain. However, his comments throughout the process suggest that the possibility of trading him is a red herring. The Raiders’ new ownership group, including owner Mark Davis, seem to be on the same page as Carroll, and are focused on attacking the new regime.

At this stage, it appears that trading Crosby was never a realistic possibility, and the team is committed to moving forward with him as a key part of their roster.
