Despite being fired midseason, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus expressed kind words for the organization after his dismissal. Eberflus was sacked after the Bears’ loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, but only hours before, he met with reporters, stating his intention to remain head coach and focus on the team’s upcoming matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
However, just hours later, Eberflus was informed of the team’s decision to move in a different direction, with general manager Ryan Poles releasing a statement expressing gratitude for Eberflus’ hard work, professionalism, and dedication. Some on social media criticized the timing of the firing, but Eberflus released a statement of his own, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the McCaskey family, Ryan Poles, the players, and the fan base.
Eberflus thanked the players for their effort, dedication, and resilience, and praised their class and representation of the Bears organization in the community. He leaves the team with a 14-32 record, making him the first head coach in Bears history to be fired midseason. The Bears are the third NFL team to fire a head coach this season.
