Escaped inmate has repeated attempts to evade authorities.

dangerous Inmate Who Fled from North Carolina Jail Has History of Trying to Evade Law Enforcement

John Nigh, an inmate who was on the run after fleeing from a North Carolina jail with the help of his cellmates, has a history of trying to evade law enforcement. According to authorities, Nigh has attempted to evade capture on multiple occasions, including an incident in which he fired at three deputies who were trying to arrest him.

Nigh is being pursued by the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, and other agencies following his escape from the Craven County Jail on Sunday afternoon. Authorities say he was assisted in his escape by his two cellmates, who concealed his getaway by stuffing a mattress to make it appear as though he was still in his cell.

A search determined that Nigh, who is considered dangerous, used a ceiling grate to enter a utility chase, and then climbed out of a ventilation housing and onto the roof. His location is currently unknown.

Nigh has a lengthy criminal history spanning multiple counties and has been armed in past encounters with law enforcement. In an incident in June 2024, Nigh fired two rounds from a small-caliber handgun at three Onslow County sheriff’s deputies. Fortunately, no one was hit, and he was subdued without further incident. He was subsequently charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Assault on an Officer, and other counts related to the encounter.

Nigh is described as a White male, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 190 pounds. He has several tattoos, including the letters “JMN” on his upper left arm and a cross on his upper right arm. Law enforcement agencies and the public are urged to contact authorities if anyone has any information about Nigh’s whereabouts.

Nigh is considered dangerous, and anyone approached by him or who has contact with him is advised to keep a safe distance and call emergency services immediately if necessary. The Craven County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to call 911 with any information leading to Nigh’s capture and return to custody.
