Karla Sofía Gascón, the first transgender performer to be nominated for an Academy Award, is facing backlash over her offensive tweets from as recently as four years ago. The Spanish star of “Emilia Perez” had made derogatory comments towards Muslims, Catholics, and George Floyd, in addition to criticizing the Oscars.
The tweets came to light just a month before the Oscars, and Gascón has since deleted her Twitter account and issued a half-hearted apology, saying “I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
The controversy has significantly damaged Gascón’s chances of winning the Best Actress award, and her film “Emilia Perez” is no longer the Best Picture frontrunner. Netflix, the distributor of the film, had made Gascón the face of the title, but the controversy has likely regrettable decision.
The incident has also had a ripple effect on the film’s overall prospects, with other movies, such as “The Brutalist” and “Anora,” rising in the rankings. While “Emilia Perez” could still win some awards, including the Critics Choice Award, its chances of taking home the top honor are slim.
