A multi-day firestorm has erupted over comments made by two incoming advisers to President-elect Donald Trump about H-1B temporary worker visas, a carve-out for high-skilled workers that some in MAGA world say are taking American jobs.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and venture capitalist Vivek Ramaswamy, who are both Indian American and co-chairs of the Department of Government Efficiency, sparked backlash on X by criticizing a culture that they said “venerates mediocrity over excellence” and argues for the importance of filling high-skilled jobs with foreign tech workers.
Ramaswamy criticized the idea of an American culture that he said “prioritizes hard work over laziness,” attributing the influx of foreign tech workers to the current system.
Musk also made a statement about the H-1B program, stating that if a person is the “top talent, then no matter where you come from, if you have a team and that’s a fact… We should try to bring those top talent into this country”.
Many have come to their defense, stating that there should be more skilled and trained immigrants brought to the US.
A prominent voice against this opinion was Steve Bannon, who described many arguments for H-1B a “total scam” on his radio show.
Additionally, several attempts have been made to reach out and explain to each other.
