A $20 Billion Annual Savings Plan to Cut Waste and Unaccountable Spending in the United Nations
As the United States continues to provide nearly a quarter of the United Nations’ total expenses, it’s time to re-evaluate the significant amount of American taxpayer dollars flowing to the organization. The U.S. provides over $3 billion in assessed or mandatory funding and voluntary contributions between $10 and $15 billion each year, with in-kind support services contributing to a higher total.
The U.S. has seen an alarming growth in UN expenses over the past decade, with U.S. payouts almost doubling. This highlights the need for a closer look at how the money is being spent and where it’s going.
Taxpayer dollars are being used for various frivolous purposes, including:
* Tax-free salaries for UN employees
* Lounges for watching sports games with low-cost food and drinks
* Media campaigns and festivities to celebrate international days, such as the “International Day of Neutrality” and the “International Day of Banks”
U.S. dollars are also funding UN peacekeepers, including blue helmets in southern Lebanon who have kept busy observing Hezbollah rearm, build terror tunnels, and fire at Israelis.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has also seen a surge in expenses, including staffing and support for Chinese “experts” on international financial obligations and human rights.
Congress has long been skeptical of UN uses of American money, and there is a growing need for transparency and accountability. The DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) plan can help achieve this by streamlining costs and reducing waste.
Despite efforts to reform the UN, the organization’s lack of transparency and accountability has led to widespread misuse of funds. The UN budget, which covers over 100,000 long-term employees, administrative costs, peacekeeping, and various agencies and bodies, deliberately lacks the transparency necessary to end misuse and corruption.
The General Assembly’s failure to break its own rule of calculating costs before approving new activities and tapping into unused resources to fund unfilled appetites is a significant concern.
DOGE can take a bold step towards reform by creating an efficient and transparent budgeting process, ending unnecessary projects, and prioritizing American national interests.
Signaling a new era of fiscal responsibility, the DOGE can respond to the challenge of braking the UN’s wasteful spending habits and protect the American taxpayer.
