U.S. Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Sales Reach 20% of Total Sales in Landmark Year
For the first time in the history of modern automotive, more than 3.2 million “electrified” vehicles were sold in the United States last year. According to Auto data firm Motor Intelligence, electrified vehicles including plug-in hybrids and all-electric models reached 20% of new car and truck sales in the country.
Despite falling under 80% for the first time, traditional vehicles with gas or diesel internal combustion engines still made up the majority of sales. Electrified vehicles were led by Tesla, with its Model Y and Model 3 being estimated as the best-selling electric vehicles in 2024.
In the ranking, Hyundai Motor and Kia came in second, General Motors and Ford Motor in the third and fourth positions, while BMW completed the top five.
The US market for electric and plug-in electric vehicles is particularly competitive, with 24 out of 68 mainstream models increasing sales from last year. Also, 27 models reported declining sales. Several new models made their market entrance last year.
