Barkley Aims to Break Single-Season Rushing Record in Final Regular-Season Game
Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Barkley is 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, a mark that has stood for 40 seasons. With his performance against the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday, Barkley became the ninth member of the 2,000-yard club.
However, with the Minnesota Vikings already securing the No. 1 seed, the Eagles’ final regular-season game against the New York Giants has lost its original significance. Head coach Nick Sirianni must weigh the pros and cons of resting his starters or going for the record.
Sirianni recalled a similar situation with wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who was going for a franchise record, and stated that he will consider the best interests of the team and the individual. “I’m going to always do what’s best for the team and the individuals going for that,” he said.
Barkley’s achievement could also make him a candidate for the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award, a title that hasn’t been awarded to a running back since 2012. He remains focused on his ultimate goal, which is to lead the Eagles to success, not just to break records.
“I came here to do something special,” Barkley said. “Breaking a record is special, but I want a banner up there. I think we all do.”
