A Raft of Drone Sightings Reveals Gaps in U.S. Airspace Security

A surge in drone sightings across the United States has highlighted the need to close gaps in U.S. airspace security, according to Mike Waltz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for national security adviser. The sightings, which began in New Jersey in mid-November and have since spread to other states, have sparked concerns and frustration among lawmakers and the public.

Despite the concerns, the Biden administration has downplayed the issue, stating that most of the sightings involve manned aircraft and that there is no evidence of a national security threat. However, lawmakers including some Democrats have expressed frustration with the lack of transparency and aggression in addressing the issue.

Waltz pointed out that the lack of clarity on the issue highlights gaps in U.S. agencies and authorities between the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement, and the Defense Department. He suggested that the creation of an “Iron Dome for America” – similar to Israel’s missile defense system – could help address the issue.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the U.S. response, stating that his agency had deployed personnel and technology to address the issue. However, lawmakers continue to call for more transparency and action.

Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar urged the Biden administration to hold a briefing for senators to explain the situation and provide more information. She also called for a review of regulations to ensure that incidents like this do not continue to occur.

The recent sightings have garnered significant media attention and have prompted the creation of a Facebook page with nearly 70,000 members. The Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates civilian airspace, has come under criticism for not doing enough to address public concerns.
