The commercial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAC) market is expected to be worth $54.6 billion dollars by 2030, according to drone market research firm Drone Industry Insights. With the growing demand comes an increasing need for skilled drone pilots.
From construction and real estate to transportation and defense, UAV operators are in high demand across several sectors. CNBC met with three drone pilots to learn about their day-to-day and how they made the career jump to become drone pilots.
Meet Kevin Chang, Senior Drone Pilot for Singapore Inspection and Engineering, who inspects buildings for signs of defects and corrosion. He uses drones to capture high-quality images and videos from unusual angles, providing valuable data for the construction and real estate industries.
Next is Tong Cheuk Fung, who specializes in flying FPVs, or first-person-view unmanned aerial vehicles. This involves flying the drone from a pilot’s perspective, requiring a high level of skill and attention to detail.
Ng Aik Thong, Chief Technology Officer at NACT Engineering, has piloted over 20 rescue missions and also creates drone accessories that modify a drone’s capability. He emphasizes the importance of safety and emphasizes the need for thorough training and preparation before taking to the skies.
