A Brentwood, New York man, 29-year-old Cody Fisher, has been arrested for allegedly speeding and causing a crash that critically injured a police officer on the Long Island Expressway (LIE). According to police, Officer Brendon Gallagher was conducting a traffic stop at around 6pm on Sunday when a Ford Mustang driven by Fisher sped past him at a high rate of speed. The officer responded, activating his lights and sirens, and tried to pull the driver over, but Fisher’s car lost control and sideswiped Gallagher’s patrol car, sending it flying off the highway and flipping upside down. The police officer was treated at the scene and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he remains listed in critical condition. Fisher sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. He faces several charges including driving while impaired by drugs, second-degree assault, and reckless driving. An off-duty police officer who passed by the crash stopped to help and apprehended Fisher. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.
