Dodgers expect Shohei Ohtani to hit, but not pitch, in Japan opener.

The Los Angeles Dodgers anticipate that Shohei Ohtani will be ready to hit when the team opens its season in Japan against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19. Manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence in Ohtani’s recovery, stating, “I don’t think he’d have it any other way.” Ohtani had surgery on his left shoulder in November to repair a torn labrum and is unlikely to pitch, according to Roberts, who noted that starting the season on March 18 and continuing through October would require a mid-season break.

As a result of his elbow surgery in September, Ohtani is doubtful to take the mound in Japan. Roberts further emphasized that a mound appearance was “very unlikely,” citing the need for rest throughout the season. Ohtani had previously opted out of the season due to elbow surgery, and it appears that he will delay his return to pitching until further notice.

Ohtani, the 30-year-old MVP, sustained the injury during a slid attempt in Game 2 of the World Series, leading to his ongoing recovery. The star player is anticipated to be in the lineup for the series in Japan, but Roberts stressed that the team would reassess his condition if he doesn’t look or feel right. As of now, however, the plan is for Ohtani to participate in the games.
