Denzel Washington’s Oscar hopes for “Gladiator 2” come to an end.

Denzel Washington’s Hopes of Earning a Third Oscar for Gladiator 2 Seem Less Likely

Denzel Washington’s prospects of earning a third Academy Award for his performance in Gladiator 2 appear to be dwindling. Despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination, the actor was omitted from the nomination list for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in the Best Supporting Actor category. This development significantly reduces the chances of Washington’s Oscar hopes.

Historically, the SAG Awards have consistently predicted the eventual winners of the Academy Awards. In the past 30 years, 28 out of 30 Best Supporting Actor Oscar winners have also received a SAG nomination in the same category. This trend has been particularly prevalent in the Best Supporting Actor category, with 21 out of 28 winners also winning a SAG award.

Washington’s performance in Gladiator 2 as the charming and manipulative Macrinus had been considered a strong contender for an Oscar win. However, the category this year is exceptionally competitive, which may have ultimately overshadowed Washington’s impressive portrayal.

Fans who enjoyed Washington’s performance in Gladiator 2 may want to consider watching his other film with director Ridley Scott, American Gangster, starring alongside Russell Crowe.

Gladiator 2 is the sequel to Ridley Scott’s award-winning film Gladiator from 2000. The film stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn, and is scheduled for release on November 22, 2024.
