Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen Emphasizes that Greenland is Not for Sale
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated that Greenland is not for sale, following President-elect Trump’s renewed calls for the US to acquire the island. The comments come as Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is currently visiting Greenland on a personal trip, where he is expected to shoot video content for a podcast and meet with locals, but not with government officials.
In an interview with a Danish TV station, Frederiksen emphasized that Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede has been very clear that there is widespread support among the people of Greenland that they do not want to be sold and will not be in the future. She also praised the US as a key Danish ally, saying, “We need to stay calm and stick to our principles.”
President-elect Trump, meanwhile, has reiterated his desire to purchase Greenland, calling it “vital national security interest” and suggesting that Denmark should “give it up.” Trump Jr. arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Tuesday, and met with locals, visited cultural sites, and shot video for a podcast. His trip is not expected to include any meetings with government officials.
Despite the renewed calls for the US to acquire Greenland, Frederiksen and the people of Greenland have consistently rejected the idea of selling the island. Greenland will choose its own future, and the US should respect their sovereignty, she said.
